The Maasai build small temporary circular houses using interlaced branches covered with cow dung and mud. This mixture dries quickly in the sun to become hard enough. The houses are all built the same way: a room where guests can chat, room for animals, the main room with a fireplace for cooking and sleeping mats, placed on the ground. There is no furniture.
The homes are built in a circular form, surrounded by a fence made of thorny branches which form an Enkang. The animal herds are grouped at the centre of the circle at night to protect them from predators. Housing that forms a village is named boma. When the Maasai must migrate, they completely destroy their old village by fire.Women build houses and take care of village life (home maintenance, meals, clothing,). Men ensure the safety of the camp and tend to livestock.
During your stay you will have the opportunity to experience the culture and traditions of the Masai people. A Maasai village visit will proceed as follows. After a welcome dance and a time of prayer, visitors are taken to the pen where livestock lodge at night. The Masai then show their guests how to make fire (with donkey dung and acacia sticks) and teach them the use of medicinal plants.
Customers then visit a Manyatta (Maasai house) before heading to the Masai Market where they can buy souvenirs.
