Prison Island

Location

Infamous as a former prison for rebellious slaves and then as an East African quarantine base, Prison Island is now recognized as a haven of peace and quiet. Despite its dark past, this islet (located a stone's throw from the old town of Stone Town) is today a vacation spot famous for its giant turtles. Surrounded by a magnificent coral reef, ideal for snorkeling (diving with masks and snorkels), it also benefits from superb beaches for swimming.
